How to Get Matches on Tinder

Preamble

I’m about to share what actually works on dating apps — what gets matches consistently.
In real life, women are attracted to men who are attractive, smooth, and seem like they get sex easily without needing to try hard for it.

On dating apps, you want to give off the same vibe. That means being attractive in at least one visible way — face, physique, style, or presence — and having photos that don’t look staged or like you spent hours trying to get the perfect shot. The vibe you want to give is: “I live a cool life, I go to cool places, I do cool things, and because I do these things often, I have plenty of pictures capturing these moments.”

To succeed on Tinder, you need to be above average-looking — roughly a 6–7/10 overall minimum, considering face, body, and (to a lesser extent for dating apps) height.
Even though being above average is a prerequisite, it’s not enough to get laid on Tinder for the vast majority of people. Profiles fail when most photos scream: “I specifically took this for Tinder.” The key is having photos that feel candid.

At the end of this post, I’ll show the four pictures that started getting me multiple matches a day, so you can see how it works in practice (these pics were of me when I was skinny and have not starting working out yet).

Why Most Tinder Profiles Fail

Apart from not being objectively attractive enough, most men fail on dating apps for two reasons.
1️⃣ They choose pictures where they don't look good.
They choose average photos. Bad lighting. Weak posture. Portray themselves as having a very boring lifestyle. They don’t look their best.
2️⃣ Or they take pics that are too staged.
The photos look too engineered. Too posed. Too staged. Too intentional.
You’ll see:
  • Perfectly centered portraits
  • Heavy bokeh blur
  • “Professional shoot” energy
And the subconscious message becomes:
“I took all of these specifically for dating apps.”
That makes it look like you're trying too hard.

Ironically, you need to put more effort into your photos —
while making it look like you didn’t try at all.

The Energy You Want

You don’t want photos that say:
“I took 100 pics until I came up with this one.”
You want photos that say:
“I was already living a cool moment… and someone captured it.”
Each picture should feel like:
  • You were somewhere interesting and or doing something interesting
  • The vibe was good
  • A friend took a few quick shots and you happened to look very good in one of them and moved on
It should not look like:
  • You scouted the location for an hour
  • Adjusted your angles repeatedly
  • Reviewed 50 takes
  • Crafted it specifically for your profile
If the photo isn’t perfect (like not well centered etc) it will actually work in your favor cause it will look like you never intended to have this picture on your profile.

One or two strong, slightly staged photos are fine.
But if your whole profile screams “photoshoot for dating apps,” it will make it look like you're trying too hard.

General Principles for Taking Good Tinder Photos
Before we get into specific photo types, understand a few core things.
Selfies are allowed.
They’re not the enemy.
But they must "justify" their existence.
There has to be a reason you snapped that picture:
  • Cool backdrop
  • Good lighting
  • Strong outfit
  • Nice interior
  • Interesting location
It should make sense that you took 2–3 quick shots because you liked the moment.

Not that you stood there for 20 minutes optimizing angles for Tinder.

And obviously — you have to look good.

Selfies are fine. Random, contextless selfies are not.

Take way more pictures than you think you need.
Most guys simply don’t have enough material.
Train yourself:
  • Use a tripod and start taking pics of yourself.
  • Learn your angles.
  • Understand posture.
  • Practice looking relaxed instead of stiff.
Ask friends to take pictures of you more often.
Offer to take theirs too (you learn a lot by taking good pictures of people).

This is a skill and to get good you need practice. A recent phone is fine no need for DSLR cameras.

Use FaceApp to fix what’s already strong.
If a photo has:
  • Great setting
  • Good body language
  • Strong outfit
  • Good lighting
But your facial expression is slightly off — don’t throw it away yet and try "salvaging it" with face app.
Unless you’re a professional model, your facial expression won’t always be perfectly on point, but with faceapp you can fix that a lot of times in a way that looks very realistic and make a lot of decent pictures look amazing.

Outfits matter more than you think.
Having nice style makes you look more attractive and confident, it's a big bonus.
You don’t need flashy brands.
You need:
  • Clean fits
  • Structure
  • Clothes that complement your physique
  • Good style

Pictures That Get You Laid

If you follow the general rules — good lighting, posture, outfits, relaxed energy, and knowing your angles — the next step is building your actual profile.
The goal isn’t a photoshoot portfolio. It’s a small set of pictures that communicates: you’re attractive, confident, and you have at least a semi cool lifestyle.

Below is a simple framework for photos that work. For each type of shot, I’ll include examples of influencers and content creators.

Disclaimer: These guys take pictures of themselves for a living. They take tons of pictures, know their angles perfectly, and are very attractive. Your photos don’t need to look as good as theirs to get results. Even if your pictures aren’t as good or you’re not as attractive, you can still make this framework work — and I’ll show you at the end with the four profile pictures that actually started getting me laid on tinder.

1️⃣ Anchor Photo

Probably the most important picture on your profile.
  • Shows your face clearly
  • Shows at least most of your body (mid-thigh and up)
  • Good posture, presence, and confidence
  • Backgrounds that elevate you (clean architecture, stylish venue, urban setting)

2️⃣ Thirst Trap Shots

These are picutres where you show your "sex appeal", it's mostly about showing your physique in an attractive way.
  • Beach, pool, gym, or even a mirror selfie
  • Should look candid, not staged or like you took a ton of pics before coming with this one specifically
  • Being lean (10 to 15% body fat) matters more than size

3️⃣ Lifestyle / Status Shots

One or two photos that show your life and interests.
  • Cool venues, travel, boats, events
  • Mirror selfies in stylish outfits and nice spaces
  • Playing with a dog, hanging out, doing interesting activities
These make you look like a real person and add dimension.

Minimal Setup

At minimum, four strong photos:
  • One anchor
  • One or two thirst traps
  • One or two lifestyle /status shots
If executed well you’re already ahead of most men on dating apps.

The Profile That Started Getting Me Laid on Tinder

Here’s the profile that actually starting getting me matches daily.
I used four pictures:
  1. Anchor Photo – Me on a bench, wearing a nice outfit, looking away confidently, confident posture, decent background/composition.

  1. Thirst Trap – Beach photo showing my physique in a candid and effortless way.

  1. Lifestyle / Casual Shot – Me getting a glass of wine

  1. Lifestyle / Mirror Selfie – Showing a nice outfit, looking good

At the time, I was around 74 kg for 182 cm — just a skinny guy with a decent body. In terms of facial attractiveness, I’d say I’m around a 6/10, nothing crazy but with the right angle and expression I can look pretty good. My body was above average but far from the ideal.

Takeaway: you don’t need to be perfect — you just need to be above average looking with good photos. That’s what gets results.
